Philanthropy

Philanthropy is at the “heart” of the Alpha Phi experience. We support the Alpha Phi Foundation which empowers women to be generous givers, raises and awards funds for programs that advance leadership development, encourages academic excellence, supports sisters in need, and educates about the value of philanthropy.

Did you know cardiac disease is the number one killer of women in America? Alpha Phis fund research and educational programs that support women's cardiac health to combat this problem. As a result of these efforts, women everywhere are learning more about the causes, the preventative measures, and the treatments available for heart disease.

Every spring semester, Pepperdine’s Iota Alpha chapter hosts its annual “EAT YOUR HEART OUT” philanthropy event to benefit the Alpha Phi Foundation. Our chapter invites the members of the Pepperdine community to a full dinner served by Alpha Phis, and a dinner-date auction. Tickets, t-shirts, “phi-cakes,” and raffle tickets are sold prior to the event, and gift certificates from local restaurants are auctioned off the night of. The various Greek organizations provide ample support by supplying the dinner entertainment. Fraternities participate in a themed skit/song/dance competition, and sororities compete in a healthy food eating contest. All proceeds are donated to the Alpha Phi Foundation.

Our chapter also participates in a variety of community service projects. Each member is expected to serve a designated amount of time volunteering in order to achieve personal growth as well as meet the high expectations set by our founders.

We enjoy participating in Step Forward Day, Pepperdine’s annual day of collective volunteer service, each year. In total, about 1,500 students go out in teams to assist over fifty nonprofit organizations, schools, churches, and parks throughout Los Angeles and Ventura counties. In addition, we participate in the annual JDRF walk (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) to raise awareness and donate to the children suffering from diabetes.

Many of our members individually partake in other facets of community service including volunteer work with hospitals and clinics, shelters, environmental projects, and Habitat for Humanity just to name a few. Philanthropic projects are a central focus and priority, but more importantly, the integral thread that ties our sisterhood together.
